Why Make This Recipe
- Classic sour cream and onion flavor
- Takes under 5 minutes to make!
- Only 6 ingredients (and nothing unpronounceable)
- The perfect dip to add to your appetizer spread
🥗 Ingredients
- Sour Cream: Full-fat and low-fat versions are fine for this dip, but avoid using fat-free sour cream—you can really taste the difference in this dip. You can also replace some or all of the sour cream with crème fraîche or Greek yogurt instead.
- Mayonnaise: Again, avoid fat-free versions, but otherwise choose whatever brand of mayonnaise you prefer.
- Onion Powder: Dehydrated onion flakes can be used instead of onion powder.
- Garlic Powder: Feel free to substitute 1-2 minced fresh garlic cloves if you prefer.
- Chives: The look and flavor of fresh chives really makes this dip sing. To double down on the onion flavor, you could add in some minced shallots or minced green onions as well.
🥣 Step-by-Step Instructions
Stir together 1 cup sour cream, ¼ cup mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper in a medium bowl.
Then stir in ½ cup chopped chives, reserving a ½ teaspoon chives to garnish.
Cover with plastic wrap and put in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
Sprinkle with reserved chives to serve.
🧐 Recipe FAQs for Sour Cream and Chive Dip
Full-fat sour cream is fairly high in calories and fat, though it is lower in calories than mayonnaise. For an even healthier version, replace some or all of the sour cream with Greek yogurt. This dip is also gluten-free and vegetarian.
Store your sour cream dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last for 3-5 days. Stir well before serving. Unfortunately, like most dairy-based foods, this dip does not freeze well.
What can you do with leftover sour cream and chive dip?
This dip will last for several days in the refrigerator. In addition to being used as a classic dip, you could stir some into deviled eggs or into a cold pasta salad. Delicious in a potato salad as well. You can also use it as a sandwich spread or dollop it on a soup like this Carrot Ginger Soup. Or, why not use it as a dip for quesadillas, like these Corn Tortilla Quesadillas. You can also turn it into a salad dressing by stirring in some buttermilk—try it as the base for this Healthy Ranch Dressing. Finally, try spooning some into scrambled eggs for extra flavor and creaminess.
👩🍳 Expert Tips
This sour cream with chives dip is perfect to serve with potato chips or crudité. You can also pair it with pita chips, smashed potatoes, pretzels, chicken wings, or sweet potato fries. Perfect as part of a game day spread with these Loaded Tater Tots!
The chilling step is crucial for the best flavor, so make sure to make this dip in advance.
Check the expiration date for your spices—if you have anything in your pantry over a few years old, consider purchasing a new spice bottle. Spices do get old over time and lose flavor dramatically. You can also experiment with adding other herbs or spices into this dip for extra flavor. A little lemon juice and/or lemon zest is delicious too!
For the cleanest cuts when you are chopping chives, use either kitchen scissors or a very sharp knife. A dull knife will crush the chives rather than cutting through cleanly, and the chive dip won’t be as pretty when you stir it together.
