This dairy-free Strawberry Banana Smoothie is still plenty creamy and delicious. The perfect morning or afternoon pick-me-up, made in just a couple of minutes!
I love making smoothies for me and the whole family, as they are such an easy way to get some good fruit in your body! Coconut water is my secret weapon for a non-dairy version, and trust me on this, it is fantastic in a smoothie. Try it in my Spinach Apple Smoothie or my Apple Strawberry Smoothie next.

Why Make This Recipe
- Quick and easy, and even faster if you have your ingredients prepped in advance
- Sweet and not too heavy
- Banana adds a creamy texture
- Classic strawberry banana smoothie recipe taste, but no dairy milk or yogurt required!
🥗 Ingredients
- Frozen Strawberries: If it’s strawberry season, of course you can use fresh strawberries instead. You’ll just need to add some ice cubes to get that slushy smoothie texture.
- Banana: Ripe or even a little over-ripe bananas are best. You can use a frozen banana as well (I like to freeze my extra bananas when they get too ripe to eat).
- Honey: Feel free to replace with maple syrup or a teaspoon of brown sugar as a substitute.
- Coconut Water: Other good choices would be to use non-dairy milk like soy milk, oat milk, almond milk or even coconut milk. You could also use apple juice or white grape juice as a substitute.
🥣 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Add 1 cup frozen strawberries (about 10), 1 ripe banana, and 1 teaspoon honey to a blender jar. Then pour in coconut water.
Step 2: Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides a couple of times as necessary. Taste, and add more honey if you like a sweeter smoothie.
Step 3: Pour into glasses and serve.
🧐 Recipe FAQs for Dairy-Free Strawberry Banana Smoothie
With the exception of honey, which most vegans do not eat, this smoothie is vegan. To make it fully vegan, just replace the honey with another sweetener like maple syrup or agave syrup. Of course, you can also use a dairy-free milk if you want a vegan option other than coconut water.
You definitely can, though I prefer the flavor and the bit of extra sweetness in coconut water. You can also use fruit juice instead of regular milk.
👩🍳 Expert Tips
For best results, control how thick your dairy-free smoothie is by adjusting the amount of liquid you add. Put in less liquid for a thicker smoothie, or add a handful of ice. Put in more liquid for a thinner consistency. You can also add in dairy-free yogurt as a thickener (vanilla yogurt or strawberry yogurt are great flavor options). I love to meal prep homemade smoothies so that it takes virtually no time to make them. Just put a cup of strawberries (either fresh berries or frozen) plus a banana into a freezer bag, then store in the freezer until you’re ready to make your smoothie. Since you have frozen fruit rather than fresh fruit now, you may need to add a little bit more coconut water to get the right smoothie consistency.
Or, keep the texture super thick to make this into a smoothie bowl. Adding granola and fresh fruit on top makes a delicious quick breakfast packed with fresh ingredients.
Want to power up your smoothie? Adding in flax seeds or chia seeds is a great way to up the nutritional content of your smoothie. If a high-protein smoothie is what you need, you could add in protein powder, a dollop of peanut butter or almond butter, or even some silken tofu.
You can also make this easy strawberry banana smoothie in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The best way to store it is in a container with an airtight lid, like a mason jar. Shake well or put it back in the blender to mix again before drinking. If you blend it, you can add an ice cube or two to thicken it up more.

Notes
Storage Tips:
You can make this smoothie in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The best way to store it is in a container with an airtight lid, like a mason jar. Shake well or put it back in the blender to mix again before drinking. If you blend it, you can add an ice cube or two to thicken it up more.
Expert Tips:
Control how thick your smoothie is by adjusting the amount of liquid you add. Put in less liquid for a thicker smoothie, or add a handful of ice. Put in more liquid for a thinner consistency.
Note that you can use either fresh or frozen fruit for this recipe. Try fresh strawberries if they are available, and add some ice to make the smoothie texture thicker. Or use frozen strawberries and a frozen banana (freeze an overripe one so you have bananas for smoothies at any time). In that case, you can either add more coconut water to get the right smoothie consistency, or keep the texture super thick to make this into a smoothie bowl.
