Why Make This Recipe
This is a go-to, easy dressing for me since I almost always have these 4 simple ingredients on hand. Plus, adding more or less water takes this yogurt sauce from a dip to a thick dressing to a delicious sauce you can drizzle.
🥗 Ingredients
- Greek Yogurt: Any plain yogurt will also work for this dressing—I prefer plain Greek yogurt since it is usually thicker than other options, so I can control the thickness of the final tahini sauce myself.
- Tahini: This sesame seed paste can be found in many grocery stores in the peanut butter section. You can also order tahini online.
- Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice always tastes better! Sprinkle in some lemon zest too for extra credit.
- Soy Sauce: I prefer a low-sodium version, but use what you have. Swap it out for tamari if you need a gluten-free option.
🥣 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 container of plain Greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons tahini, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon of low-sodium soy sauce.
Step 2: Add more lemon juice, a teaspoon at a time, to taste. Season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Step 3: Add a little water a tablespoon at a time, until the sauce reaches the consistency you want.
Storage Tips
This tahini yogurt dressing will last for 3-4 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. I like to keep it in a small mason jar with a tight lid.
🧐 Recipe FAQs for Tahini Yogurt Sauce
Most soy sauce brands are not gluten-free, so to make this tahini greek yogurt sauce entirely gluten-free, you need to replace your regular soy sauce with gf soy sauce or with tamari.
👩🍳 Expert Tips
Be sure to stir your tahini very well before using, especially if it has been sitting on your pantry or refrigerator shelf for a while. Also, note that packaged tahini really varies in how thick it is. If yours is so thick it is more like a paste, you may need to add more water to your sauce.
For a really smooth sauce, you can put the ingredients in the food processor instead.
Want to play around with other flavors? Try adding fresh herbs to your dressing, such as fresh thyme, fresh basil, fresh mint, or fresh dill. You can also add in some miso paste for more umami flavor (either replace tahini with miso or use them both!). Try adding a minced garlic clove as well. Stir in some ground cumin, or sprinkle paprika on top. Pomegranate seeds, toasted pine nuts, or fresh parsley make great garnishes.
Need more inspiration? Drizzle this yogurt tahini sauce over a Beet Salad and serve with pita chips, or try it as a dressing for this Quinoa Salad with Chickpeas. It's delicious on this Roasted Cauliflower with Walnuts.
You can even keep it thick and just use it as a dipping sauce for raw vegetables, like carrot sticks and cucumber sticks. Serve it over roasted radishes. It’s a classic sauce for falafel. And it’s also delicious as a sauce for Chicken Kabobs, grilled shrimp, or other grilled meats.
