  • Apple: Try a sweet/tart variety like a Pink Lady or Honey Crisp. If you use a more tart apple like a Granny Smith apple, you may need to add more honey.
  • Spinach: Feel free to use frozen spinach if you prefer.
  • Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt adds tangy-ness to this smoothie. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, try vanilla yogurt instead. 
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice is best—you’ll need the juice from 1 lemon for this smoothie.
  • Coconut Water: The lightly sweet flavor of coconut water is lovely with this apple spinach combo. If you don’t have any, try replacing with any kind of milk (both dairy and dairy-free milk, like almond milk or soy milk, work!)

🥣 Step-by-Step Instructions

Cut 1 apple into chunks, removing the seeds. Stir 2 teaspoons honey into 1 container of plain Greek yogurt. Add apple chunks, 2 cups baby spinach leaves, honey yogurt, and 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger to a blender.

Pour in 2 tablespoons lemon juice and ¾ cup coconut water. Blend well until completely combined, scraping down the sides of the blender jar as necessary.

Pour into 2 glasses or 1 large mason jar, and serve. If after blending, you would like a thicker smoothie, add ½ cup of ice cubes and blend.

Can I make a non-dairy or vegan Apple Spinach Smoothie?

Yes! Just replace the yogurt with a fresh or frozen banana for a non-dairy spinach smoothie. For a vegan spinach smoothie, you might also want to replace the honey with a different sweetener. Brown sugar or maple syrup would be good substitutes. 

Is it OK to put raw spinach in a smoothie?

Yes, absolutely! Rinse your spinach first, and pat dry. Then it’s really to add to your blender. The great thing about using fresh spinach in a smoothie is that the other ingredients really mask the flavor—so you don’t feel like you’re drinking straight spinach!

As long as you have a powerful high-speed blender, like a Nutribullet, you don’t need to peel the apple in this green smoothie recipe. If you find that your blender does not make your smoothie smooth enough with an unpeeled apple, you may want to peel the apple before blending. 

Want to really dial up the healthy ingredients in this smoothie? Blend in chia seeds or flax seeds—or just sprinkle the chia seeds on top. You can also add protein powder or a dollop of peanut butter for a high-protein smoothie. Try serving with homemade Turmeric Ginger Shots for an extra boost.
